COOP - Norway's largest distribution centre under construction

13-04-2010

The largest distribution center in Norway is scheduled to be ready in 2014 in Oslo. The central warehouse, which will consist of a number high bays, pick & pack stations etc., will include food as well as non-food goods for the entire Coop chain in Norway.

Automation and ergonomics

An important part of the project is to automate as much as economically advantageous and with ergonomics and energy in focus. During spring 2010, Coop will select the right vendor; process in which Langebæk Logistik participates as the primary consultant.

"We face the same challenges in relation to the authorities, that builders in Denmark and Sweden have experienced over the last few years, because high bays are still uncommon and no fixed guidelines apply. In this context, the cooperation with Langebæk Logistik is a gain for Coop."

Streamlining functions

"We started from scratch. We contacted Norwegian consultants, but at the time none of them had the necessary skills to advise us. Therefore, we expanded the search to the rest of Scandinavia and found that Langebæk Logistik has the proper expertise to help us implement the project," says Ståle Nersund.

First and foremost, Coop Norge's new warehouse is meant to expand the chain's capacity. Secondly, the warehouse will result in significant savings, as many functions will be streamlined and consolidated. Overall, the central warehouse will cover an area of 50,000 m2 with a height of up to 30 meters

Extreme makeover

”Due to the optimisation of the logistics layout we have experienced significant improvements through the supply chain. As an example, the local shops save a large amount of time ordering goods – today they spend down to half an hour per week ordering goods - previously, the same task took them a day. Furthermore, the stock of each shop has been reduced with up to 40%, which of course has also helped improve our liquidity. "
